India has one of the highest recorded numbers of people with diabetes in the world at over 60 million.

Changing diets and obesity are key contributory factors, as is genetic susceptibility; many Indian people have a particularly high body fat percentage.

Some medical experts also believe that babies who are undernourished in the mother’s womb are also at an increased risk.
