Japanese Encephalitis kills over ten thousand people every year and permanently disables many more. An outbreak in Uttar Pradesh, Northern India has left many hospitals unable to cope. The disease is carried by mosquitoes, and affects wide swathes of South and East Asia. The only vaccine is expensive, and requires multiple doses to be effective - but a new drug from China could be way forward.
