Malawi is losing its trained medical staff, they are leaving for jobs abroad – especially in the UK. Only 1 in 30 vacant posts can be filled. HIV and malaria are also leaving their mark on staffing levels. The effect on pregnant women and new-born babies is devastating. In Mozambique, they have introduced local qualifications to redress the balance. Novel techniques such as the Kangaroo Mother Care are also saving the lives of premature babies in areas with few nursing staff.
