The bacteria Streptococcus Pnuemoniae , also known as the Pneumococcus, is the leading cause of severe pneumonia and meningitis in children. It is estimated that between 800,000 and 1 million child deaths are caused by Pneumococcal disease each year. The majority of these deaths occur in developing countries. Since 2000 new complex vaccines have been developed to tackle the problem.
